Service Description

Day 1 (Saturday, October 3rd 10am - 1pm): Making Vessels (at Mudstone Pawtucket) Day 2 (Saturday, October 10th 10am - 1pm): Trimming / Burnishing (at Mudstone Pawtucket) Day 3 - (Saturday, October 17th 10am - 1pm): Prepping Pieces and Firing (at Mowry Commons, Revive the Roots) Smithfield RI Day 4 - Sunday, October 18th 10am - 1pm: Unloading the pit and sealing pieces (at Mowry Commons, Revive the Roots) Smithfield RI In this four-part workshop, students will be introduced to pit firing, an atmospheric firing that uses pit-contained natural flames and combustible materials like sawdust, copper, coffee grounds, salt and more to create surface reactions without glaze. This hands-on workshop celebrates pit firing as a communal process where we will craft and prepare our work together, participate in a group loading and lighting of the pit, and share in a collective unloading of the pit during the final day to reveal our pieces. The first two workshop days will happen at Mudstone Pawtucket, and the last two days and the firing itself will be done in Smithfield, RI on the grounds of Mowry Commons, a beautiful outdoor space managed by Revive the Roots. This is an intermediate course open to both wheel throwing and hand building students. We will discuss forms that are suitable for pit firing, and demonstrations will be provided for both wheel throwing and hand building students.
