Service Description
Curious about wheel throwing and ready to make something beautiful? This beginner-friendly class will guide you step by step through creating and decorating your own handmade vases. We’ll start with the basics of wheel work—centering clay, pulling even walls, and forming a simple cylinder, the foundation of any vase. Once you feel comfortable on the wheel, we’ll explore how to shape that cylinder into different vase forms, from tall and elegant to short and curvy. You’ll learn how to adjust your technique to create a variety of styles that show off your personal touch. After throwing, we’ll move into the fun part—decoration! You’ll get hands-on experience with surface design techniques that bring your vases to life. We’ll explore ways to add texture and carved details using simple tools and everyday objects. You’ll also learn about underglaze decoration and the sgraffito process—painting on color, then scratching through it to reveal designs beneath. You can freehand your drawings for a more organic look or use stencils to make crisp, clean patterns. Each step will help you understand how surface design and form work together to make a piece truly stand out. This class is designed for beginners and those still gaining confidence on the wheel. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to get a little muddy and try something new! Your instructor will offer plenty of one-on-one guidance, helping you build strong foundational skills while encouraging creativity and experimentation. By the end of the session, you’ll have several vases of your own design, each one showing your growth in both technique and style. You’ll leave with the skills to keep practicing, experimenting, and enjoying the process of throwing and decorating pottery. All materials, clay, and tools are provided. Just bring your enthusiasm—and maybe an old apron or towel!
